Auschwitz Women's camp (in Auschwitz II) had an orchestra formed from inmates by Commandant Maria Mandel. She saw to it that they were adequately fed and clothed and they were provided with better accommodation and heating.

The women had to play when the long columns of inmates were marched off to work in the mornings and when they returned in the evening - and also during hangings.

Fania Fenelon has written about her time as a member of the Auschwitz Women's Orchestra.

___
