N0. One man can not start a great depression even if he tries to start one and most certainly Hoover did not want to start any kind of depression, let alone a great one.
yes
Herbert Hoover had just become President in 1929 when the Great Depression began. His ineffective response led to his defeat by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932.
Herbert Hoover, a Republican, was the President when the stock market crashed in 1929 starting the great depression.
The main start of the great depression was the stock market crash in 1929. President Hoover did not hold action because he assumed things would get better on their own but he was incorrect and president Franklin D. Roosevelt saved the stabilized the economy with deficit spending until the start of WWII.
Eight months into Hoover's presidency, the Great Depression hit. He mistakenly believed it would only be a brief recession. Later it became clear that excessive speculation and a worldwide economic crisis had resulted in landing the country in a depression. Although he worked hard to fix the economy by funding agencies, encouraging labor relations, formed liaisons between business and government to stabilize prices , his focus was on indirect relief from the states and the private sector. As the depression worsened and calls for federal aid, were demanded, Hoover dug his heels in because he believed government intervention would lead to socialism. This did not bode well with the people and he was defeated by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his reelection effort. How did Hoover start the great depression.
The main cause to the start of the great depression was the Wall Street Crash in 1929.

He promised Americans that there would be a chicken in every pot if elected President. Once elected, the stock marketcrashed, the country plummeted into the worst depression it had ever known and people not only lacked a chicken in their pot, many didn't even have a pot.

There was no such president. Franklin D. Roosevelt ATTEMPTED TO use government spending to jump start the economy and end the Great Depression, but it didn't help. In fact, economists today tell us that if Americans had re-elected Herbert Hoover instead of electing FDR, the Depression would have ended much sooner. However, FDR was elected (to four terms!) and so the Depression lasted a decade. He did not end the Depression; it was ended by the advent of World War II, which provided enough jobs to end the unemployment.
