Poland did not attack first. The Nazis attacked a radio station on the German side of the border to make it appear that Poland had attacked them. The ruse was complete with dead Polish soldiers which were actually concentration camp victims dressed in Polish Army uniforms, and code named, "canned goods."

Some German territory had been transferred to the revived state of Poland at the end of World War 1. The Nazis, though they had a non-aggression treaty with Poland, suddenly said in 1939 that the German-speaking population of Poland was being treated very badly and made territorial demands on Poland ... The Polish government did its utmost to avoid provoking Germany. Very early on 1 September 1939 the German (!) secret service (SD) organized on attack on a radio station in Germany, near the border with Poland. About one hour later vast numbers of German troops poured into Poland and the German air force started bombing the country. Hitler's appetite for territory was boundless.
