Lamar moved the capital of Texas from Houston to Austin in 1839 primarily for strategic and symbolic reasons. Austin's location was more central and defensible, situated farther from the coast, which was vulnerable to attacks. Additionally, Lamar aimed to promote the development of the interior of Texas and believed that establishing the capital in Austin would encourage growth in that region. He also wanted to honor Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas," by naming the capital after him.
