The battle ax was one of the more fearsome of the Vikings weapons. It came in single bladed or double bladed and could be wielded with one or two hands. The Romans found ax could easily cut through their helmets and were forced to add a special iron strip (like a visor) across the front to protect their heads.
The Viking seax was not an ax, rather a heavy chopping sword.
