Harold had the shield wall
The shield wall at the Battle of Hastings, fought on October 14, 1066, was approximately 200 to 300 yards long. This defensive formation was used by the Anglo-Saxon army, led by King Harold II, to protect against the Norman forces commanded by William the Conqueror. The length of the shield wall was crucial in providing a solid front against the invading army, although it ultimately fell to the tactics of the Normans.
The line of defence was called the shield wall. This is were the anglo-saxons locked all the shields together to create a wall were the opposing army would have to try and break through.
They would form a shield wall, and have the invading army attack it. The second and third lines of the wall would throw spears or stab between the gaps of the shields to kill off as many of the invaders against the wall as possibile.
They didn't, the shield wall broke itself by following what they thought were routing troops. They were subsequently turned upon.

I think that they were designed so that if the first wall fell to an attacking army they could retreat and make another stand on the second wall
The duration of The Glass Wall is 1.37 hours.
