The Romans used the trident for fishing. Some ancient peoples also used the trident as a military weapon, but the Romans did not.

The trident was also used for a type of gladiatorial fight which was a parody of fishing. A retarius (net fighter) fought against a secutor (a gladiator with armour and sword). The retarius had to try to trap the secutor with a net and then kill him with a trident. It has to be noted that gladiatorial fights were not like they are depicted in films. Originally they might have been exclusively fights to the death, but then the Romans got in the habit of sparing the life of the defeated gladiators who fought well. Showing good skills in combat was more important than bloodshed. Emperors Caligula and Claudius made themselves unpopular by refusing to spare the lives of popular gladiators.
