Some were able to escape from Naples on the morning of 24th August, 79 AD(CE). Vesuvius erupted with a Plinian eruption, meaning there was no lava, but rather a pyroclastic flow, a cloud of super-heated ash(around 900 degrees Fahrenheit) which moves at hundreds of miles per hour. Under 8 inches of Ash, Pumice, and hot lapilli rock, roofs in Pompeii collapsed. In the nearby small town of Herculaneum, volcanic mud swallowed the town, over time becoming stone. In Pompeii, those who survived the night of August 24th would still fall victim to the eruption, as the air they breathed became poison. The air was not only polluted with the same toxic, super-heated ash, but also with poison gases, like Sulfur dioxide(SO2), Carbon Dioxide(C02), Hydrogen Fluoride(HF), Hydrochloric acid(HCI), Sulfuric Acid(H2SO4), Hydrogen Sulfide(H2S), in addition to Water Vapor(Which would probably be steam), Nitrogen(N), Hydrogen(H), Carbon(CO), Fluorine(F), Argon(AR), Chlorine(Cl), and Sulfur(S). Most Chemical plants don't even release this many poisons. People exposed to this would go blind, have respiratory paralysis, have severe acid burns to the skin. Your throat and nose would burn. In addition, most or all of these gases are extremely flammable, some even explosive. So you can imagine what the people who stayed in Pompeii went through. While we don't have exact numbers for the amount of people who survived, we can estimate. So far we have found around 1000 corpses in Pompeii, and around 300 in Herculaneum. We estimate that Pompeii had between 20,000 to 24,000 people, and that anywhere from 10,000 to 18,000 people died. It is almost certain that some Romans were not in Pompeii due to things such as business. Around 6,500 people lived in Herculaneum, and most except for, we estimate, the 300 we have found.
Pompeii is considered a dangerous place to live because on August 24, 79 AD Mt. Vesuvius erupted and covered and preserved Pompeii with volcanic ash. Many Romans died, and the plaster casts of how their bodies looked when they died can still be seen today today. Back then, the Romans did not know Mt. Vesuvius was a volcano. Today, Vesuvius is still active, therefore, it could be still considered dangerous.
Yes, in fact, most people did survive; roughly about 2,000 people died as a result of the eruption. If no one did, then we would know nothing of the eruption. Pliny the Younger, a senator of his day, was an eye witness.
Mount Vesuvius is in Italy. Italy is in Europe. So to answer your question...Mt. Vesuvius is on the continent of Europe.
Mount Vesuvius is a Composite (Stratovolcano)
Mount Vesuvius is dormant (sleeping), not extinct.
It's simple to survive any volcanic eruption; be somewhere else when it happens. For pyroclastic volcanoes like Vesuvius, hopefully many miles away.
The Romans did not predict the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. That is why so many people in Pompeii and herculaneum died.
Mt. Vesuvius was sacred to Romans and Greeks because of Hercules/Heracles. Herculaneum was named after him. Mt. Vesuvius was sacred to Romans and Greeks because of Hercules/Heracles. Herculaneum was named after him.
