Yes castles were used as defense against outsiders, each castle had multiple traps and levels so it was very difficult for enemies to overtake a castle

Why did castles change?

Castles changed because people kept on finding stronger materials and better structure. To keep castles going now they would of had to find a material that couldn't be effected by gunpowder, which is nearly impossible! Also they were some disadvantages about some castles such as the Motte and Bailey castle it had a weakness and the weakness was that it was made out of wood and could burn.So they changed it to a stone keep and this just carries on changing and changing getting better and better. Hope that helps.

How did castles differ between 1066 and 1558?

In 1066 Castles where only made of wood and earth ( Motte and Bailey Castle), but around 1558 castles where built of strong stone, with thick inner walls and turrets. (Concentric Castle. Castles started off as weak and not good at defence or attack, but over the years they have been improved for battles and for more people. For example: The Concentric castle took years to make because it had inner walls made of thick stone. Castles changed because when a place expands and changes, castles need to get bigger and better with it. Also, they need to be prepared for enemy attacks.

Why were Concentric Castles better than Motte and Bailey castles?

Concentric castles were better than Motte and Bailey castles because concentric castles were made out of stone and Motte and Bailey castles were made out of wood. Stone's better than wood for these reasons: * Wood catches fire easily * Wood rots within a few years * Wood's lighter making it easier to knock down Even though stone is better than wood in those many ways, wood's cheaper and, as explained above, is lighter. The wood being light means that it's easier to built.
