Ironsides refers to the armour he wore during the civil war
While many people believe Oliver Cromwell tried to ban Christmas in 1652, that is not entirely accurate. He tried to make it more difficult for people of Christian faith to celebrate in the same way as they did before he came to power.
No makeup, no theatre, no sports, no gambling, no pubs, no Christmas, no Sunday walks, no games, no colourful dresses.

Oliver Cromwell was a Parliamentarian that disagreed with King Charles I not giving power to Parliament to make just and fair laws. King Charles believed he was an absolute monarch and a Divine Right Ruler - receiving his power to rule from God and had the right to allow Parliament to meet or send it home. The disagreement between the Crown and Parliament, and King Charles willingness to let Catholicism back into England, even though English law forbade it, led to a civil war between the King and Parliament. The King's army, the Cavaliers were well trained and armed. The army of Parliament were young lads and farmers and not so well trained. The Roundheads were no match for the Cavaliers. As a result of the Roundheads being routed, Cromwell formed and trained his own army - The New Model Army. The New Model Army defeated the Cavaliers, and King Charles was eventually beheaded by sword. Cromwell tried to get Parliament to rule justly and fairly, but was unsuccessful. He became dictator (Lord Protector) of England for several years until a new Parliament was in place that made fair and just laws for English citizens to live by.

Oliver Cromwell was in control of England as 'Lord Protecter Cromwell', he got his name because the members of the parliment decided that he would be best because he listens to people, helps them out and trys to make a difference for everyone!!
Oliver Cromwell (1599 - 1658) was an English soldier and statesman who helped make England a republic and then ruled as lord protector from 1653 to 1658. He executed King James I. His son Richard was named as his successor and was lord protector of England for 8 months. However, he was not a charismatic leader like his father and he could not reconcile the various political, military and religious factions of his day and soon lost the support of the army on which his power depended. Parliament therefore asked King James' son to return to England as the monarch.
Oliver Cromwell made several controversial choices during his leadership, particularly regarding his approach to governance and religious tolerance. His decision to dissolve the Rump Parliament and rule as Lord Protector can be seen as a move towards authoritarianism, undermining the democratic ideals he initially fought for. Additionally, his military campaigns in Ireland and Scotland, which resulted in significant violence and suffering, have led to lasting criticism of his legacy. While some view his actions as necessary for stability, others see them as detrimental to the very principles of liberty and justice he advocated.
Oliver Cromwell is considered avillain in England for a few reasons. First of all, he committed regicide, or to put it simply, he beheaded King Charles I. Many people didn't like King Charles I at the time, but they didn't want to see him put to death. Another reason is because he demolished the monarchy Thirdly, he created a new government and appointed himself as the leader (the protectorate and the lord protector, respectively) and eventually became a tyrant in the process. He banned drinking, gambling and dancing, swearing, christmas, work on sundays, sport on sundays, (which was what a normal person during the time participated in during down time.) All together, these acts were enough to make the Britian's grit their teeth.
