No, they celebrated Holy Days, which is not the same thing. Local clergy were responsible for ensuring that everyone in their own parish marked Holy Days, Feast Days and other elements of the church calendar. Anyone failing to respect these religiously important days would be reported and eventually tried in a Bishop's court, with very serious consequences.

Feast Days were the many days of every month dedicated to a Saint - either a locally-recognised Saint or a national or international one. Everyone was expected to attend church on the Feast Day of a Saint, to eat specific types of food and to refrain from work. Holy Days included Sundays, Lent, Easter, Christmas, Epiphany and many more, all of which had to be observed in different ways.

As the medieval period progressed, more and more Saints were created, each with his or her Feast Day to be added to the calendar; in some places almost one day in every three was eventually a non-working day (a situation that was almost intolerable for landholders).
