America, at the time an English colony, was built by slavery. The slavery, at the time of the Civil War, was concentrated primarily in the south, impacted all American industries:

textiles mills, agriculture, ship building, manufacturing, banking, livestock (slave breeding (slave was property could be sold as a commodity, at the time of the Civil War a healthy adult slave was worth $1,600).

America was the world's leading exporter in sugar, tobacco, cotton, indigo). Slavery jump started America. At the time of the Civil War their were 4 million slaves.

Remember with out the large plantations, America was a county of small farms and local merchants.
