However, attacking the base by airplanes may have been somewhat surprising; most aircraft carrying a heavy enough pay-load to do that much damage and flying that great of distance didn't exist in 1941. Using Aircraft Carriers for that great of distance, and getting away with that much stealth, and using that much firepower...was NOT thought to exist either.
