The Blitz caused an enormous amount of civilian casualties for the first time ever in war, as well as a great deal of damage, anguish and human suffering. If that was the short term aim of the German High Command it was a success. In the long term aim, to give the Luftewaffe control of the skies over Britain and soften up the population below in preparation for the invasion of the UK, it failed. The Battle of Britain saw the RAF keep control of the skies and made invasion impossible.
