The women of the upper class in the Elizabethan era were not allowed to work outside the home. However, women of the lower class in addition to working in the home doing cooking, cleaning, tending children and livestock, farming, etc., also worked outside selling in the open markets, worked on farms, spent entire lives in domestic service for the upper classes as cooks, laundresses, housemaids, nursemaids, performed services for pay such as laundry, cooking, worked in taverns, shops, etc. Their world was completely male dominated. if a woman didn't have the protection of a husband or male relative she had to perform menial work to survive.
