Using the Nazi salute was seen as some kind of privilege (!) and from 1938 onwards its use by Jews and most Slavs was forbidden. Its use by Poles was expressly prohibited and there were penalties for anyone who used it. Apparently, some Poles changed it to 'Geil Gitler' (something like 'Horny Hitler') and other mocking versions.

Germans were also expected to sign letters with 'Heil Hitler' or with the words 'Mit deutschem Gruss' - which means 'With German greetings' (!)

The use of the Nazi salute and 'Heil Hitler' was one of those things that made Nazi Germany look ridiculous abroad ...

Hitler's hail to victory salute?

Hitler adopted the stiff-armed salute for his troops from Benito Mussolini, who had copied the old Roman salute. Hitler went to the extreme had had civilian people punished who would not give the salute. The salute was not given to victory but was given with the verbal salute of "Heil Hitler". ________ Another theory I've heard is that he adopted Mussolini's fascist arm raise only because he had a hand-shaking phobia.

Why did Adolf Hitler do the type of salute that he did?

Hitler modelled his 'Third Riech' on the Roman Empire. This can easily be seen in the classical building project which he embarked on. The open handed salute was copied from the Roman military salute. With the salute were spoken the words 'Sieg Hiel' which translated means "Hail to the call of victory" which was sometimes combined with a heel click.

Where did Adolf Hitler come from?

Heil is a form of greeting. So it was natural to use this term to greet Adolf Hitler. The Nazi stiff-arm salute that was used when saying this originated from the ole Roman salute. Hitler may have adopted this from his first visit with Mussolini in Italy.

When do the nazi do the Hitler salute?

The German armed forces were formally ordered to begin using the Nazi salute on July 24, 1944. Prior to this date the Nazi or Fascist salute, with the right arm stiffly extended to its full length and usually accompanied by a loud “Heil Hitler,” had been optional in the armed forces. In fact, outside of the SS units which routinely used the Nazi salute, the regular army (Wehrmacht) tended to stick with the more typical military salute of the right hand touching the rim of the cap. What precipitated the change was the failure of the July 20, 1944 plot to assassinate Hitler. A bomb was placed in the conference room at Rastenburg where Hitler held his daily briefings, but unfortunately the blast only injured him. Hitler had long since had all the armed forces swear an oath of allegiance to him personally, but the matter and manner of saluting had been discretionary until after the bombing, when Hitler wanted to further insure the enduring allegiance of his forces by using the Nazi salute exclusively. This continued until at least April 30, 1945, when Hitler committed suicide in the Führerbunker in Berlin beneath the Chancellery. Seven days later Germany surrendered unconditionally.Since the end of the war, the use of the Nazi or Fascist stiff-armed salute has been forbidden by law in Germany and Austria, although variations of it are still used by neo-Nazis and German skinheads.
