The vikings wrote with the Futhark. Its a character row that was designed to be carved into wood or stone. They didn't have parchment or paper, so books and whatnot were nearly impossible. Stories and other knowledge was passed down verbally. However, there are MANY examples of rune carved monuments, as well wooden stakes and tablets with quick short messages. Many of them were used by traders to identify goods.
The runes were also believed to be magical, and is the basis of one of the two viking age style of magic, called galdr.
