The Chinchorro and Chachapoya's also mummified their dead. In fact the Chinchorros were the first ever peoples to mummify their dead 7000 years ago before the Ancient Egyptians did.
it included a number of independent city-states with competing rulers
They believed in an afterlife much like their current ones, in which the pharaohs were again kings. To that end, the remains of the rulers were carefully preserved (mummified).
The Incas mummified their dead rulers and preserved them with offerings such as food, clothing, and treasures. These mummies were kept in special tombs and were believed to still have influence in the afterlife.
mummified cats and dogs but only if that was their rulers pet.

The actual name of the civilization is "Quechua". It's common to refer to this people as "Incas" but Incas were only the rulers.

The Incas were polytheists (they had more than one god). The Incas also had used sacred objects, had held rituals on sacred locations. The Incas believed in afterlife. They cared deeply for their dead, whom they had embalmed before burial, mummified and had placed into tombs. That's it! : )

My heavens no!! have you ever head of hatshepsut?? she was a very powerful ruler of egypt and not too long ago, egyptologists found her mummified body. So no... it was not only men that were mummified. although it may seem like it because mostly men were rulers of egypt but mummies werent always rulers or pharaohs, occasionaly they were great people who just were very important and the Egyptians thought they deserved life after death as well, so they mummified them. hope this helps :)
the mummies were important because it let the egyptians believe that whom they mummified (often Pharoahs or other rulers) would be going to the after life
