There was a lot happening politically and socially at that time, so a lot of factors were affecting relations. It would have had some impact, but only as a part of a range of things. In the longer term it created a platform on which Sinn Féin began to grow its electoral strength after the election of Bobby Sands. Gaining electoral support showed there was another way other than violence, and although it took a long time to happen, it did help to bring Sinn Féin towards the peace process, which also involved the British and Irish governments.
