In World War 1 the U.S.S.R was trying to take over Germanys and the other countrys land. Then in World War 2 Adolf Hitler tryed to get more land for Germany and slaughter all the Jews.
When the war began, the major powers on the Allied side were Great Britain, France, and Russia. Other countries who were on the side of the Allies at the start included Serbia, Belgium, and Japan. Other countries joined later, like the US, Italy, Greece, and some small kingdoms in the Arabian peninsula.
During World War 1 the central powers consisted of Germany the Ottoman Empire Austria Hungary and Bulgaria.

Germanys empire was in WW1 because of the alliances the other countries had.
Great Britain, France and Russia were the main powers. They had other allies including the U.S., Japan, Spain and others.
There were no reasons for Great Britain declaring war upon Germany other than Germanys invasion of Poland and their refusal to get out when requested to do so. The Polish had a treaty with the British to come to one anothers aid in case of invasion.

Nationalism was the internal disorder of European nations (most notably the Great Powers) in 1914, the year World War I started. Every Great European Power had been experiencing high levels of nationalism where they believed they were the greatest society and were superior to other Europeans, and where they wished to maintain Great Power status by battling the other Great Powers.

There were more than two military powers involved. The Germans opposed the allied armies that included the US, Great Britian, Russia and several others. On the other side of the world Japan (an ally of Germany) opposed the US, Austrailia, the philipines, Russsia, China and other smaller countries. That is why they refer to it as a world war, because most of the worlds powers were involved one way or other.
