In the events leading to The American Revolutionary War, a number of the political leaders were members of a secret group called The Masons. They were sworn to secrecy. What went on inside the group stayed inside the group.
They had a youth organization called The Sons of Liberty. (They also had a Daughters of Liberty group.)
Men part of a totally different Masonic Lodge would train Sons of Liberty troops. Then men from yet another Masonic Lodge would give the orders to the Sons of Liberty troops as to what actions to take. Thus, neither the men involved in politics nor the ones involved with training The Sons of Liberty would have any provable connection to any action the group took.
So the Sons of Liberty were a Gestapo organization for the Masons. We do not know all they did since the Masonic Lodges keep their records sealed.
(Yes. They were involved in riots when stamps were burned.)
George Washington, Benjamin Franklyn, and Paul Revere among others of the founding fathers were masons. Our history books tell us what occurred in the open meetings but not what went on in the secret meetings and how the secret spy organization helped the war effort.
