The Bombing of Darwin changed the relationship between Britain and Australia in 1942. The British refused to send the Aussie troops back to Australia to help defend the country from the Japanese attacks.
What changed the colonists ideas about British later
Australia's foreign policy between 1901 (federation) and 1950 (the Korean war) was based upon the commonwealth. However after the formation of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, Australia was urged by Britain to relax their foreign policy. Not quite right. The word 'Commonwealth' means the people. The people of Australia were drawn into WW1 by the British as we were still a dominion of the British Empire at that stage. To answer the question correctly one must recognize that Australia remained a Colony of the British Empire until 1911. His Majesty King George V proclaimed Australia a 'Dominion' of the British Empire in 1911, and we remained a Dominion of The British Empire until 1919. Australia achieved independent sovereign nationhood status following the end of WW1 and was welcomed into the family of nations as a foundation member state of the League of Nations at the time of the signing of 'The Treaty of Versailles' on the 28th June, 1919. This historical chapter in Australia's history took place in the 'Hall of Mirrors' at the Palace of Versailles in France. So Australia's foreign policy up until 1919 was that of the British Parliament as Australia was still a Dominion of the British Empire. Australia's foreign policy changed in early 1920 when the League of Nations Covenant & Charter became International Law. Australia spoke for itself as an independent sovereign nation on foreign policy issues from that date.
Several countries in the British Empire have changed their names after gaining independence. For example, Ceylon became Sri Lanka in 1972, and the Gold Coast was renamed Ghana in 1957. In 1986, the British colony of Burma officially changed its name to Myanmar. Additionally, the British colony of Rhodesia is now known as Zimbabwe since 1980.

The name "Australia" was formally adopted in 1824, but the western half of the continent (then known as New Holland) was not considered part of Australia until the British formally claimed it in 1829.

The current Australian flag was designed in 1901 by British subjects living in a British overseas possession . Australians are no longer British subjects and Australia is now a Sovereign Independant Nation in its own right . But the design of the flag has not changed to reflect the new status . It now implies a false allegiance . To answer the question in reference to expressing the question as a debating topic: "The Australian flag is not relevant to Australia".
How is Australia's education system
The first sight the British had of Australia was barren desert. The first British man to come to Australia was William Dampier, who first landed on Western Australia's coast on 4 January 1688. His reports of Australia were decidedly unimpressive, and he even described the indigenous people as the "miserablest people in the world". Dampier felt the land was flat and unwelcoming, and held no promise for future settlement. This changed after James Cook sighted e eastern coast, which was rich and fertile. Cook saw dense bushland, clear harbours and the prospects for colonisation.
