The order of a person's names depends on what culture the person is in and how formal the naming is.

In western cultures, the personal name comes before the family name in most situations. However, when providing identity information in some bureaucratic situations where names will be alphabetized, the family name may be required first, separated from the personal name by a comma. Some western cultures use more than one family name for an individual. Then the listing can be more complicated.

In some cultures influenced by Chinese culture, the family name is normally given first, followed without punctuation by the personal name.
