This is a novel about Jerome Washington, a Latin teacher who was a lone African-American teacher at Chelsea School, an elite all-boys boarding school and tried not to appear too racial. Rashid Bryson, a promising black inner-city student arrived at the school and sought Washington as an ally against Chelsea as a citadel of white privilege. Washington rejected the boy's friendship. This dismayed Bryson, who turned to Jana Hansen, a middle-aged white divorcee who was also new to the school. Hansen had her own reasons for becoming involved in the lives of both Bryson and Washington. This is Southgate's first novel. It is a story about how the protagonists get caught up in race and class and how this leads to confrontation.
