Kiran Bedi was the first woman to join the Indian Police force.
She joined in 1972 and retired in 2007, having achieved high-ranking positions within the police force and within governmental departments.
She also hosted a quasi 'entertainment' program on Indian TV, where she played the part of a judge in family disputes.
The purpose of the program was twofold, it had a special interest and 'entertainment' value, but was also designed to help families understand basic legal issues and procedures.
Kiran Bedi was also instrumental in setting up two 'non-governmental' organizations, one that focused on welfare and preventative policing, the other on prison reform and other social issues.
