Abraham Lincoln was the President during the American Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865. He stated that his primary goal in going to war with the South was to preserve the Union and uphold the Constitution. recognition
To assert the viabiliy of the Confederacy as a sovereign nation and gain official recognition by Congress and by foreign countries.

It fulfilled its most urgent aim - to keep the British and French from granting recognition to the Confederates, as this would have made them look pro-slavery. Its official aim - to inspire the North into a heartfelt crusade against slavery - was not fulfilled to any marked degree.
