Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand Steuben, also referred to as the Baron von Steuben, was a Prussian-born military officer who served as inspector general and Major General of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
Baron Friedrich von Steuben was put in charge of training the raw troops at Valley Forge. He had introduced himself as a General officer in Prussia and volunteered to work without pay at training the soldiers. Later it was found out that he never made it higher than Captain; but he had done such a good job at training the soldiers and making them into an army that Washington made him a General in spite of his lower ranking.
