It started as a concept put forward by the 1st Lord Baltimore George Calvert and given to King Charles I to establish a new world Colony of Englands unwanted Catholic minority. In 1632 Calvert died and five weeks later the Charter for Mayland was granted to his son Cecil Calvert the 2nd Lord Baltimore. Ships, supplies and colonists saliled for the New World in 1933 under the leadership of Governor Leonard Calvert, via Barbados and Jamestown and arrived in Maryland on 25 March 1634.
The charter for the colony of Maryland was granted to George Calvert Baron of Baltimore. He died, however, before the colony was settled. His son, Cecil Calvert or more commonly know as Lord Baltimore, saw to it that the colony was settled. In 1633, the first group of settlers sailed for the colony led by Leonard Calvert, Cecil Calvert's younger brother.

The Calvert family led by Cecil Calvert, an English Catholic nobleman, started a colony where Catholics would be safe. This colony was settled in Maryland and allowed the Catholics to practice their religion without fears.
