The 'noblest' way to invent names for mythical creatures is to first describe the creature in the archaic language that the creature belongs to then 'evolve' it a bit.
For example: the word vampire is thought to come from the Tartaric word for witch. Medusa is derived from the Greek for 'protectoress' or 'guardian'. Gorgon Greek for 'terrible' or 'loud roaring'.
So if we were to invent a creature from the french for 'Old man of the tree'. In french we would say something like - vieil homme de l'arbre.
dropping all silent letters would give us something like - Vil om del arbr. Mushing it together gives - Vilomdelarb then Vilomdarb.
Since this is fun, let try Latin for Ear crab.
auris cancer -> Auricanser -> Aricans
others are invited to contribute for further examples.
