The health system in Portugal has undergone great changes. Recently a great ammount of medical facilities were shut down due to low turn-out, focusing the technology and resources in greater city centers in an attempt to muster better economic-efficient results. Civil servants are offered health insurance for the time being, but it is estimated that it will soon be revoked and remand the insurance applications to the private sector. There was a rule established for maximum allowed cash payment for each day a patient spends at a hospital of 5 euro, not counting major surgery or other significant fees. Public clinics are substancially cheaper than the private sector, as they are supported partially by the state. For example, I would pay 30 euro for a simple visit in a clinic and only about 2 euro in a state-run facility.
