William duke of Normandy.
William was crowned king of England. He couldn't be king of Normandy because it was, and still is, part of France; and the king of France would not have allowed that.
When William invaded England and became its king he was also the Duke of Normandy. Normandy is, and was, part of France and as duke he was, in theory, a servant of the King of France. Integrating England and Normandy would either mean England was part of Normandy and therefore part of France, or Normandy was part of England, which would not have gone down well with the King of France who, in theory, own it.
He thought that William Duke Of Normany would attack first so put most of his kinghts down south. Some of corse were at the top. When Harald Hadrada attack only half or less of the army were there so they had to march up to meet him. So he was planning the defence from William Of Normany.
From 1940 till 1945. Some small islands off the coast of south Normany were not freed, but had to wait for Germany to surrender in 1945.
that area is the shortest distance from England to France. The Germans were convinced the allies would try to land at Calais and kept their main forces there as well as a great percentage of their tank forces. Had such German forces be near Normany it was possible the German could have overcome the 6 June invasion.
