There is one main difference between the ancient aqueducts and our water systems is that the water from the aqueducts went directly to the people (or to a holding tank, as in Pompeii) Our water is piped like an aqueduct, but it goes through a filtration system to rid it of pollutants and harmful bacteria.

The ancient Roman aqueducts were, in their time in the ancient world, works of engineering that were unmatched by previous civilizations. The Romans built aqueducts all over the Italian peninsula. Most of these were used to supply fresh water to Rome. They were needed as some historians place the peak population of Rome to approximately to one million people. Fresh water was clearly a vital necessity. The Romans built aqueducts in the provinces as well. There are significant remains of them in Gaul and as far east as Judea.

From the time of the first aqueduct in 312 BC BCE the aqueduct system changed in terms of using better building materials and in the amount of water they could carry. Appius Claudius Caecus is given credit for the construction of the first aqueduct.

As an example of improvements we can look to the aqueduct in the province of Gaul, now southern France.

The structure is 330 feet high and is part of a larger aqueduct system sponsored by Agrippa. The fresh water source was 31 miles away from the city it serviced.

Much of this system was built underground, however when necessary, this system simply bridged a river to transport the water. This aqueduct is an example of an improved system than ones built hundreds of years earlier. It was an improvement in the economics of building them and a safer way of construction and better use of construction materials.

Aqueducts had no pumps to push the water. Thus the water channel could be carried directly across small valleys and gorges at a considerable height. The newer aqueducts could carry as much as 30,000 cubic meters of water per day.

In its time this was remarkable.

It was still over time expensive to build aqueducts. However as Rome expanded and Roman colonies were created in the various provinces, its citizens came to expect the same services that Rome had. here we now see that emperors had to sponsor the building of a large aqueduct.

The production of cement improved in quality and amount produced. Lead pipes could redirect the flow of water within the main channel of an aqueduct.

In the eastern parts of the empire, the emperor Hadrian sponsored the construction or restoration of at least 12 aqueducts.
