Names for patterns for patchwork hand made quilts.
Pioneer women made every imaginable kind of quilt ! Many times when crossing the prairies, they would sew together ( as they walked ) little bits of fabric, creating a 9-Patch, to be assembled later when more room was required. There are so many different 9-patch variations, ( churn dash, hour glass, friendship star, prairie queen, card trick, to name a few ! ) And each state ( in the USA ) has it's own 'official' quilt block. One that I have run across often in the older quilts that seemed to be very popular, is the Ohio Star. If strips of fabric were on hand, women often made log cabin quilts. And there are as many different varieties of the log cabin as there are 9-patch. If irregular pieces of fabrics were on hand, many women made 'crazy quilts' . . . silks and velvets were popular for crazy quilts.
Quilts were traditionally made from a variety of materials, including cotton, wool, and linen, often utilizing scraps from old clothing or household textiles. These materials held significant sentimental value, as they reflected the personal history and social status of the quilter's family. Additionally, quilts often served practical purposes for warmth and comfort, while also being a means of artistic expression and storytelling within communities. The choice of fabric and design often conveyed cultural identity and heritage, making quilts both functional and deeply meaningful.
None according to Giles R Wright, president of the Afro American history program at the New Jersey historical commission, quoted in Origins of the Specious by Patricia O'Conner. There are only a few surviving examples of quilts sewn by slaves for their own use, and none show secret codes. Wright gives three main reasons for discounting the story of secret codes sewn into slave quilts. 1) No quilts survive 2) None of the former slaves interviewed by the works progress administration in the 1930s mention the quilts 3) Not one of the diaries or memoirs from the time mentioned them The earliest mention of secret codes hidden in quilts is 1987.
Quilts have been made for hundreds of years and continue to be made today.
Fabric
Pioneers made various types of quilts, including patchwork quilts, which were created from scraps of fabric, and whole-cloth quilts, made from a single piece of fabric with minimal embellishments. They also crafted utilitarian quilts for warmth, often using layers of wool or cotton padding. Special occasion quilts, such as wedding or friendship quilts, featured intricate designs and were often gifts or commemorative pieces. Additionally, some pioneers made quilts with unique patterns that reflected their cultural backgrounds and personal styles.
