In the late 1990s, fears began to grow that computers would not be able to understand dates after December 31st, 1999, because of a limiting in their programming. Because of our increasing reliance on computers, people began to worry about a complete collapse of society. Much like last year's "Mayan apocalypse", some people went so far as to build bunkers in their yards and stock up on canned goods.

As you might have guessed, society didn't break down, because computer programmers had anticipated the Y2K glitch, and updated software to be able to read dates from the 21st century. Many stores and banks actually advertised their computers and cash registers as "Y2K proof", and in the end, only a handful of computers worldwide experienced some glitches.
