Native American names are generally given out in naming ceremonies, they are not translations. Some people ask for loose translations of their names, and in rare cases that is possible. That is not an easy question to answer. First, I would suggest doing a thorough family tree to determine where the American Indian ancestry comes into play. Talk to family members, write down the stories. Bear in mind that sometimes the stories of families don't always match up with what you uncover when doing your family research. You will want to check birth, death, deeds, censuses, etc. There are many sites online to do this. Also there are sites online where others who have researched their ancestry can offer tips on how to proceed or avoid pitfalls they ran into. Once you have that all in place, determine what tribe you ancestors belonged to. Determine where they lived at the time of their births and at the time of their marriage. That is the starting point. If you know all that, you can contact (usually in writing) the tribe itself. Many have contact addresses on their websites. Ask for their assistance when they can. Bear in mind, they get these requests constantly. You would have to be prepared to give them the name of your ancestors and their information too. Also remember that even though a tribe might have been located in a certain part of the country when your ancestor was alive, it doesn't necessarily mean that is where they are today. This will probably take a very long time, but good luck.
