Age of a GunFirst you have to know what you have. There are published serial number lists for some manufacturers. Others marked their guns with a date code and some of these codes are available but others are not. And many of the old companies had no method of identifying the date of manufacture. So, some guns can be precicely dated while for others you may have to be content to know the range of years during which the model was manufactured or when the company existed.

Some guns may be identified by the serial number.

Some guns can be dated by particular features they have.

Some guns cannot be dated any more accurately than the nearest decade.

For some of the more well-known makes and military surplus guns you can look for a group of enthusiasts who may have that information. Search for a forum. For antique guns such as flintlocks your best bet is a professional appraiser or historian.

In many cases, it is completely impossible either because there are no records or the manufacturer no longer exists. This is usually true for guns that were inexpensive to begin with.

It will depend on whether the manufacturer kept such records and if those records survived. Although if it was made in either Germany or Italy, it'll have a date code that can be found online. If there are no records of anything other than start/end year and total made then you may be able to approximate the date of manufacture. I have several who's birthdate I will never know. On the bright side, if the weapon in question was made by S&W, Colt, Mauser or Beretta to name a few then there's a good probably of a record. I hope this helps you.
