To be completely honest and realistic, you can't.
If you want a book that contains the best advice available and is readable, get the Novel Pulling Throughby Dean Ing. It contains an appendix explaining how to build an effective Fallout Shelter, wide scale Radiation Survey Meter, etc. that you would need, using ordinary household materials. It is much more realistic than any of the government Emergency Preparedness literature that I have read! Much of the government literature publishes plans assuming you will have many months of warning and $10,000 to $100,000 construction budgets, or just glosses over crucial but inconvenient material. If a real nuclear war comes there will be no warning, but the first blinding flashes!
Hiroshima held the first nuclear attack bringing the nuclear age.
The Soviet Union lent Cuba nuclear missiles in order to protect the sovereignty of Cuba, a communist nation.
Americans were afraid of a possible nuclear attack.
Nuclear attack to japan

It is quite difficult.... Israel army is a junction of nuclear weapons.....
nuclear deterrence - the idea that if you attack me with nuclear weapons then I will attack you back with nuclear weaponsmutual assured destruction - the idea that if you attack me with nuclear weapons then I will totally destroy you with nuclear weapons and if I attack you with nuclear weapons then you will totally destroy me with nuclear weapons - thus any nuclear attack by either party will result in the certain destruction of both parties
I would suggest reading Dean Ing's novel Pulling Through, especially the appendices. He tells how to make everything necessary using ordinary household items and how to use them. It is best to make the items first rather than waiting, but at worst they can be made when needed.
Is protect a synonym for attack?

In general, seeking shelter in a sturdy building or underground structure can offer the best protection from a nuclear blast, radiation, and fallout. It is recommended to follow official guidelines and emergency procedures in the event of a nuclear attack.
