We were protecting the South Vietnamese from the North Viet Cong. Un fortunately, we had a very bad President that could not decide what level of involvement we should have so he went up and down in his policies. We stopped bombing, and then started again. The North Viet Cong could shoot at us for a period and we had to get permission to fire back. Rather then fighting to win, we fought to contain and to bring them to the table.
We forgot that when you fight you MUST fight to win.. period. We didn't and therefor we had no chance. You defeat the enemy from within their ranks with propagande and deception. They did and they won. Lesson to learn.. make sure that does not happen again or now!
