Americans settling in the Northwest Territory could gain statehood by meeting specific population and governance criteria outlined in the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Once a territory reached a population of 60,000 free inhabitants, it could draft a state constitution and apply for admission to the Union. Additionally, the territory needed to establish a republican form of government and ensure the protection of civil liberties and education. This process fostered orderly expansion and integration of new states into the United States.
The Northwest Ordinances attained a maximum population of five states to be admitted to statehood.
The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 established a structured process for settling and governing the Northwest Territory, which encouraged westward expansion by providing a clear framework for the admission of new states. It guaranteed basic rights for settlers, such as freedom of religion and the right to a trial by jury, which made the region more appealing for migration. Additionally, the ordinance prohibited slavery in the Northwest Territory, setting a precedent for future territories and shaping the socio-political landscape of the expanding nation. Overall, it facilitated orderly settlement and laid the groundwork for the growth of the United States.

Thomas Jefferson After the end of the American Revolution, Congress established a system for settling the new territory the United States acquired. The land involved was located west of the Appalachian Mountains and eventually became the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and a portion of Minnesota. The Land Ordinances of 1785 and 1787 served as a framework for settling this Northwest Territory.
flockaThey used a system called Land Ordinance of 1785which set up a system fot the settling of the Northwest Territory
To an extent it was. They did not find the "northwest passage", a river that led from the east to west, which would have been a major way of trading. However, hundreds of new plants and animals were discovered, more accurate maps of the west were created, and it opened Americans up to the idea of settling in western territory. So for the most part, yes, it was a success.
