Simply put, that is human nature. Humans have their beliefs, yet don't always adhere to them. The slaveholders could also save a lot of money by not having to pay the growing number of taxes on their crops/services/slaves etc. Is it so wrong to hope for a better future, yet do nothing about it? Thomas Jefferson wrote all men are created equal. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness, remember that line? Nowhere does he mention freedom. His hope was to draw an outline for future generations.

Abraham Lincoln, who was a student of Jefferson's writings, later went on to "free" the slaves.

But still, one has to note that Jefferson set the tone for the United States' future. Filled with hypocrisy and duality, like Jefferson himself, the United States grew. And here we are. Still so at odds with our writings and beliefs. We're only human...
