Because the people of the countries they invade did not have access to firearms and were because of this easilly subdued,later on when the locals got arms,either bought themselves or given by other countries,they manged to drive the british out.After they had done this their countries soon colapsed as none of the locals knew how to run a country or any kind of industry and they ended losing everything and going back to living in mudhuts and tending goats between spending the rest of the time killing each other in endless wars over trivia and they are still doing it today,the poor old empire was destroyed for the sake of their "Freedom" freedom from what?oh oppression,you mean advancement,the argument goes on.Look at Zimbabwae.
