Julius Caesar went by the customary rules of his time. He followed the cursus honorum and was elected to each office in the proper order and at the proper age. He accepted the office of dictator, which was a legitimate public position under the republic. While dictator, the groveling senate seemed to try to outdo itself in heaping various honors on him. He never refused them and because he retained so much power, got himself killed. However, everything he did, with the exception of starting the civil war, was done according to the prevailing rules.
