San Franciso, Los Angeles, San Diego, the three largest cities (today) in California were building transport/cargo (Liberty Ships/Victory ships); and were bases for US Navy Destroyers, Cruisers, Submarines, Battleships, Aircraft Carriers and repair facilities for all five at Mare Island in San Pablo Bay (part of San Francisco Bay), and Hunter's Point in San Francisco.
San Franciso, LA, SD, were created by the US Military. California was one, if not the only US state that was NEVER a US Territory; California had 7 Military Governors before receiving statehood in 1850. Mare Island was the oldest US Navy Base on the West Coast, established in 1854. California went directly from a MILITARY possession to statehood.
