Egypt is just a big patch of desert but it has a great big river flowing through it. And the nile flooded gently everyyear, almost like clockwork. This watered and fertilised a vast agricultural plain. The constant availabitily of water and the regular replenishing of the fields made possible a garaunteed food supply that could support an enormous population much of which didn't actually have to work at farming much of the year. Thus there was always a surplus labor force that could be put to work conquering other peoples and bringing their wealth back to Egypt and building monumental temples and tombs. The excess food produced also meant there was also always something to trade for the gold, silver, silks and ivory produced by neighboring peoples.
