The main mode of transport for the Ancient Egyptians were boats on the River Nile. These ranged from small canoes to large barges for carrying heavy freight. As wood was scarce and expensive these were usually made from reeds which grew along the banks of the Nile. Only sea-going ships and galleys owned by the nobles or the Pharaoh were made from imported timber. The Egyptians were lucky because the prevailing wind and the current went in oposite directions. You could drift down river with the current and sail back up the river against the current. On land peasants used donkies as pack animals. Horses were used to draw chariots they were not ridden and too valuable for pulling carts. Heavy loads such as large stones and statues were placed on sledges dragged by slaves.

What kind of trransport did people have in ancient Egypt?

For long journeys, the best form of transport was by boat. Otherwise, people walked and had pack animals (usually donkeys) to carry goods. The Egyptian army had no cavalry, but horses were sometimes used by scouts and messengers. They were not generally used for transport among ordinary people. Chariots were a weapon of war, sometimes used in hunting, but not a general form of transport.
