Hernando Cortes could be considered a madman but he only wanted to explore places on earth. He killed many people especially in the Aztec empire. He brought over many European diseases and ruined Aztec culture and history. However, he built Mexico City on the Aztec ruins. He introduced many positive aspects into Aztec ways of life like horses, sheep, cattle and different types of grains and foods. he might have gone a bit over the top with conquering many places in the world but he only wanted to be recognized for what he did. At the time, to him, it might have seemed like he was doing the right thing but to us he wasn't. He had many battles against the Aztecs, the people who treated him like a god or king. It is uhp to you to decide what impact he had o the world but I personally think he wasn't that much of a bad person. He did what he did because he was passionate about it and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
