For much of it's history, Japan as a nation has been referred to as Nippon or Nihon (日本), the origin of the word 'Japan.' However, the first recorded name of Japan was Wa (倭 or 和). Another classical name for Japan was Yamato (大和), the original name of the Japanese Empire which until 100-200 years ago did not include all of the territories that make up Japan today.
The 1904-05 war between Japan and Russia is generally termed the Russo-Japanese War. To the surprise of many European nations, Russia was unprepared for this war and lost to Japan. Japan never declared war on Russia, they just attacked various Russian territories in East Asia.

Japan was very harsh towards the people in the territories that it occupied. It committed many instances of genocide, murder, rape, starvation, theft, destruction, brutality, etc. It was often worse than how Nazi Germany treated the people in occupied western Europe. Of course Nazi Germany's treatment of all Jews and those peoples from eastern Europe (poles & Slavs) is unequalled in modern times.
