Levis (named after Levi Strauss) became popular because they were rugged, did not rip easily, and were comfortable for work, especially for men who had an outdoor job. While today, there are many kinds of pants that fit this description, back in the late 1800s to early 1900s, Levis were unique. At that time, it was mostly working men (men who worked on the railroad or did other kinds of labor) who wore them; but later, especially in the 1950s and 1960s, casual styles that both men and women could wear, as well as styles that were not just for laborers became widely available.
