Marco Polo began his exploration around 1271 when he set out from Venice with his father and uncle. He returned to Venice in 1295 after spending nearly 24 years traveling through Asia, including notable experiences in China. His journeys were later documented in "The Travels of Marco Polo," which provided Europeans with a detailed account of the East.

Many people thought Polo's explorations would yield nothing, and just be a wild goose chase. Therefore, the game where you blindly stumble along (sailed) in an area of water (the oceans he sailed), looking for things (people, in the game) to get you out of trouble (being Marco) would naturally be named after him; because at the end of the game, you find someone to get you out of being Marco, and Marco Polo found the Orient people to get him out of the debt he would have been in if he wouldn't have brought home riches and valuable knowledge. (Sorry that sentence was so long! :D)
