The Mayan system is not hieroglyphs. The Mayans created a syllabary where each separate syllable has a symbol. The Cherokee also use a syllabary. The Japanese also use a syllabary. When a language uses a total of 90 or fewer sounds, a syllabary takes less time to learn than an alphabet. A 5 year old Cherokee child would learn to read and write in 4 months.

It is much easier for children to learn to read and write German and Spanish than it is to learn English and French. In German or Spanish, each letter has one sound. (Spanish has the exception that ll and y are pronounced the same. Also g has two sounds, however, both are only indicated by a g.)

What did the Spanish think and do to the Mayan writing system and Mayan books?

The Spanish were catholic and thought the Mayans were savages and less than human. So they thought that the books that the Mayans kept about their history and their religion (called codices) were savage also. When the Spanish started invading around the 16th century, many of them were destroyed. Only four of these sacred books remain today. The system of writing was retained by some Mayans who converted to Catholicism and taught others in secret. The writing remained on giant stone slabs called stelae, which were similar to codices.
